Happy Earth Day!

When it comes to fashion we often focus on the outward appearance of a garment. The fabric, how it feels, the style, patterns and colors. Anything that attracts the eyes and feels good. But do we take a few minutes to analyze the make up of the garment and ask what are we actually wearing? Well, if I'm being completely honest I don't lol! At least not most of the time. When I shop for clothes I browse through, see what catches my eyes and if it matches my style and a good deal, then it's mine.

I recently became more aware of the types of garments I invest in after watching a Netflix documentary over the pandemic on the idea of "sustainable fashion", which is environmentally friendly. I'm sure you've heard this term before and have seen it being used by fashion companies to promote eco-friendly garments. But in reality, fast fashion continues to thrive which has a negative impact on the environment, foreign factory workers continue to earn little to no money producing clothing we see in popular fashion companies. And the cycle continues where fashion companies remain wealthy and the issues aren't entirely being addressed, but I digress that's another convo for another day. Let's dive into how you can save the environment.

Here are a few Earth -friendly tips:

  1. Donate your old clothes, instead of throwing them out!

Some garments are made out of synthetic fabrics that takes longer to break down and can negatively effect the environment. Donating to your local community center helps to contribute to a healthier environment of less pollution.

2. Use natural sunshine, instead of a dryer to dry clothes.

If you live where it is warm all year round, you have an advantage! But, if you live where you experience the changing of four seasons like me, get ready for the spring and summer months. Hang your clothes to dry outside on a line, using natural sunshine instead of a dryer. This saves energy and less wear and tear on your clothing!

3. Use eco-friendly detergents

Similar to the fabric of a garment, the make up of laundry detergents are also important. Be aware when shopping for eco-friendly detergents they should not have "petroleum-based chemicals".

4. Upcycle clothing by revamping an old garment.

Rather than making a new purchase, browse your closet, see if you have something you haven't worn in a while or don't care to wear anymore and revamp it. Get creative!

On that note, I encourage you to be more mindful and start practicing earth friendly habits when it comes to the type of clothes you purchase and how you take care of your clothing. It starts with you, encourage a friend and together we can play our part toward a cleaner and healthier earth. Remember to stay stylish and green!

If you've made it thus far, Thanks for reading!
